Bison hunting started on Antelope Island, in the Great Salt Lake, in 1896 and continued as a frequent activity until 1926 when the Big Buffalo Hunt eliminated all but a few of the bison. Thereafter, public sentiment changed during the 1920's and activists began to call for the protection of the herd on the island.
